Character is everything…

This is a hands-in-the-dirt workshop led by two facilitators—Ami Lum and Kana Felix—who know how to push, hold, and elevate writers. We'll dive deep into what character truly is: how to build compelling characters from scratch, know them inside and out, and make them resonate with your audience. You'll walk away with at least one fully realized character you can't stop thinking about.

Who is this for?: If you keep getting notes that your characters are "flat," "unbelievable," or "boring"—this is for you. If you're struggling with any aspect of your screenplay, this is also for you (because it usually means you haven't found the root of your character). And if you're brand new to screenwriting, character should be your foundation. You're in the right place!

Pricing: We offer tiered pricing to accommodate different budgets.

Payment plans are available—just email us.

Generous Tier: $1,000 — Pays facilitators a living wage and helps us offer sliding scale access to writers facing systemic barriers to wealth.

Full Tier: $850 — Pays facilitators a living wage.

Sliding Scale Tier: $800–$600 — For writers facing systemic barriers, including those from historically marginalized communities (BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, etc.).

Stories begin with a spark—an image that haunts you, dialogue that echoes in your mind, a joke you can’t stop laughing at, or a character quirk you can't shake. These moments are your portals, inviting you into unexplored worlds.

This intensive workshop will teach you to recognize these portals and, more importantly, how to walk through them with fierce commitment. You'll learn to trust your instincts, embrace the unknown, and transform fleeting inspiration into compelling screenplays that grip audiences from page one.

By the end of this workshop, you'll be obsessed—in the best way—with the stories only you can tell. Don't have an idea yet? Perfect. We'll find it together.

What You'll Explore: The essential story elements that make screenwriting sing: characters that are fully alive, plot structures that shape story, theme that resonates, conflict that lights a fire and burns, dialogue that crackles, and worlds that feel lived-in. Everything we cover will be tailored to ignite your creative process and equip you with methods that actually work for your unique voice.

The Workshop Experience: Each week, you'll dive into carefully selected screenplays—both pilots and features—analyzing what makes them effective while applying those insights to your own work. You'll have opportunities to share your writing in our supportive community, receiving constructive feedback that helps your stories shine.

Great screenwriting doesn't just tell audiences what characters are feeling—it makes them feel it in real time, experiencing every triumph and heartbreak alongside your protagonists.

Who Should Join: Whether you're a seasoned writer or venturing into screenwriting for the first time, this workshop will meet you where you are and push you toward where you want to be.

See below for the topics we’ll be exploring, screenplay assignments, and for reviews from previous workshop participants.

LIVING, BREATHING, SCREENWRITING

Virtual. Sundays, March 23 - May 11.

10 am PT/1pm ET/6pm GMT.

2.5 hours sessions. 12 students max.

Each week we will discuss a specific topic within the writing process and a crucial story element. The lessons will then be grounded by analyzing great screenplays (both TV pilots and features) to see how it’s done and to witness what is possible! You will also be writing each week and sharing/receiving feedback from the class. Scroll below to see what’s in store week-to-week!

This class will be very interactive, vulnerable, honest, and fun. While I’ll be leading you into these topics and subjects, I very much believe in de-centering authority and learning from one another and ourselves.

This is all about the joy and art of screenwriting. I will not really be touching on “breaking in” or the business side of things. While I think there’s a lot to be learned on those topics, I’m not the one to teach it. So if that is what you’re looking for, I’d suggest searching for a different workshop.

Who This Workshop Might Be Good For:

-Those brand new to screenwriting who are wanting to jump in and get a foundation that is built from from mining your depth as a storyteller.

-Established writers who want a new way into your stories or feel like you’ve hit a slump/fallen-out-of-love with it all.

-Writers who have taken writing workshops that have felt cold, formulaic, or just didn’t emotionally/intuitively resonate.

-Those wanting a space that keeps them accountable to reading/dissecting screenplays.

-Those wanting to get into development/story analysis work and want to see a way/language/method of helping writers with their stories.
